The Torre dei Caduti in Bergamo, designed by Marcello Piacentini, was constructed between 1922 and 1924 as a monument to those who fell in the First World War. Standing 45 metres high on a square plan, the tower rises in Piazza Vittorio Veneto at the entrance to the Sentierone, the civic heart of lower Bergamo.
Built on the site of the Prato di Sant’Alessandro—historically the location of one of Lombardy’s most significant annual fairs, documented since the ninth century—the tower embodied the patriotic rhetoric that followed the war. The monument served both as memorial and as an instrument of national consolidation, a function explicit in the inauguration address delivered by Mussolini on 27 October 1924. Urbanistically, the tower’s prominence testified to the growing importance of lower Bergamo as a developed civic area.
The structure is now part of the Museo delle Storie di Bergamo network, managed by Fondazione Bergamo nella storia. Following restoration work, the tower reopened to visitors on 24 May 2015.
About Marcello Piacentini
Marcello Piacentini (1881–1960) was a Roman architect and urban theorist whose work shaped Italian architectural discourse in the early twentieth century. Born in Rome and trained at the Regio Istituto di Belle Arti (1901–04) alongside his father, Pio Piacentini, he pursued experimental approaches to urban planning and decentralization. His competition entry for a city-centre plan in Bergamo (1906–08), modified during execution from 1911 to 1927, demonstrated his interest in integrating buildings with their urban context.
