Overview

The Passage Pommeraye solves a slope in spectacle: three glazed galleries step down nine metres through a grand wooden stair flanked by gas-lamp-bearing genii – notary Pommeraye’s 1843 speculation that bankrupted him and gifted France its arcade masterpiece. Statues of commerce’s trades watch from the cornices; the Surrealists (Breton, Pieyre de Mandiargues) canonized its dream-stage air.

History

Slave-trade-rich Nantes’ bourgeois century built the passage between theatre and exchange; cinema returned often – Demy’s Lola danced here, his city’s poem. Restoration in 2015 regilded the putti and relit the lanterns; boutiques and the original toy-shop spirit continue the promenade.

Architecture and Design

Cast-iron columns and walnut shopfronts line the levels’ procession; the stair’s double flight under the long skylight is the set piece – retail architecture as opera. Medallions of Nantes’ notables survey the descent.

Cultural significance

The Pommeraye crowns the European arcade tradition with Brussels and Milan – the 19th century’s covered street perfected on a hill – and Nantes’ romantic self-image’s heart.

Visiting today

Open shop hours; morning light through the glass roof gilds the stair. The Graslin theatre square and Lieu Unique extend the walk.

Getting there

Tram 1 to Commerce; the passage links rue de la Fosse to rue Santeuil mid-slope.
