Overview

The Ancienne Mosquee du Vendredi – Msikiti wa Ijumaa – has prayed over Moroni’s crescent harbour since 1427, its stacked white arcades and square minaret doubling in the bay’s reflection between beached dhows. It is the defining image of the Comoros and the heart of the medina’s coral-stone lanes.

History

The islands threaded the Swahili world’s monsoon trade – Shirazi traditions, Omani links, sultanates exporting ylang-ylang and cloves; the mosque anchored Moroni’s rise from the medieval Bambao sultanate to the federal capital. The minaret of 1921 lifted the call above French colonial rooftops; independence’s flags changed below while the five prayers held their schedule.

Architecture and Design

Two storeys of horseshoe-arched verandahs catch the sea breeze for the prayer halls; coral lime renders the volcanic stone in the whiteness the lagoon light demands. The medina behind – carved doors, sultans’ tombs, the bangwe squares of public debate – extends the ensemble UNESCO holds in tentative regard.

Cultural significance

The mosque represents the Comoros’ Swahili-Islamic civilization – the islands of the moon’s six-century urban Islam – and gives the young federal state its serene national symbol amid coup-prone politics.

Visiting today

Non-Muslims may view from the harbour quay and, dressed modestly, are often welcomed outside prayer times by the caretakers. Sunset paints the white arcades gold over the dhows.

Getting there

The old port adjoins Moroni’s medina; the airport lies 25 minutes north along the lava coast.
