Overview
The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque stands on an artificial lagoon at the edge of Kampong Ayer, the centuries-old water village of Brunei’s capital. Completed in 1958 for Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III – the architect of modern Brunei – the mosque lifts a dome of pure gold 52 metres above marble minarets, courtyards of Italian marble, and a ceremonial stone barge floating in the lagoon.
History
The 28th Sultan built the mosque as the spiritual centerpiece of his modernization, financed by the oil wealth that transformed the small sultanate. The design was developed by the Italian studio of Rudolfo Nolli, long active in Bangkok, blending Mughal domes and minarets with mid-century engineering. The replica royal barge in the lagoon, added in 1967, commemorates 1,400 years of Islam and hosted Koran-reading competitions.
Architecture and Design
Carrara marble walls, English stained glass, Arabian carpets, and Shanghai granite meet beneath the gold mosaic dome; at night floodlights double the mosque in the lagoon’s mirror. The bridge to Kampong Ayer ties the monument to the stilt city it serves, where 30,000 people still live above the water.
Cultural significance
The mosque is the national symbol of Brunei, expressing the union of Malay Islamic monarchy that defines the state. It appears on the currency and remains the heart of royal religious ceremony, ranked among the most beautiful mosques of the Asia-Pacific.
Visiting today
Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times except Thursdays and Fridays; robes are provided. The view at sunset from the lagoon promenade, with water-taxis crossing to Kampong Ayer, is the classic image of Brunei.
Getting there
The mosque is in the compact center of Bandar Seri Begawan, walkable from the waterfront and the Royal Regalia Museum; water-taxis connect to the stilt villages opposite.
