Overview
The Central Railway Station of Maputo (CFM – Caminhos de Ferro de Mocambique) presides over the Praca dos Trabalhadores with a domed pavilion of mint green, white stucco, and wrought iron. Long attributed romantically to Gustave Eiffel, the building was in fact designed by Portuguese engineers; its copper dome was prefabricated in South Africa and its ironwork shipped from Britain – a true monument of the imperial supply chain it served.
History
The station was the ocean terminus of the railway to the Witwatersrand gold mines: Lourenco Marques, as Maputo was then called, prospered as the nearest port to Johannesburg, and the line carried the migrant labour and minerals on which the regional economy was built. Completed in 1916, the station has survived colonial war, independence in 1975, and civil war essentially intact.
Architecture and Design
A central dome 50 metres high rises over the booking hall, flanked by arcaded wings with cast-iron columns and verandahs. Marble from Portugal, ironwork painted white against the green walls, and period lettering give the ensemble its photogenic unity; vintage steam locomotives stand on the platforms as a free open-air museum.
Cultural significance
The station is the emblem of Maputo and a regular entry on world lists of beautiful stations. Its platforms hold a jazz and cultural venue, and the building has appeared in films including Blood Diamond – a working monument where commuter trains still depart beneath the dome.
Visiting today
The booking hall, platforms, and railway museum are open daily; the Kulungwana gallery hosts exhibitions and Friday-evening jazz. The fortress and the baixa markets are a short walk away.
Getting there
The station stands at the foot of the baixa, ten minutes on foot from the fortress of Maputo; commuter trains and the Ressano Garcia line toward South Africa depart from its platforms.
