Overview

The Teatro Solis – named for the Rio de la Plata’s European discoverer – opened in 1856 with Ernani beside Plaza Independencia: the continent’s oldest theatre in continuous operation in its original hall. Zucchi’s eight-column portico and the horseshoe’s five tiers received Caruso, Toscanini, Nijinsky, and Sarah Bernhardt on the Atlantic circuit’s golden runs.

History

Merchant subscription built it through siege years – Montevideo’s Great War with Rosas’ blockade; the theatre’s shares financed national identity in velvet. The 1998-2004 restoration steeled the fabric and glassed the wings’ bars; the SODRE seasons, Comedia Nacional, and tango’s gala nights keep the boards warm.

Architecture and Design

The portico’s Corinthian octostyle faces the plaza’s Artigas mausoleum; the hall’s 1,500 seats rise under a ceiling allegory restored to candy freshness. Backstage tours walk the historic machinery; acoustics rank with the continent’s best.

Cultural significance

The Solis is Uruguay’s civic parlour – the small republic’s claim to the arts’ first rank – and Montevideo’s ceremonial address beside the presidential plaza.

Visiting today

Guided tours run daily (Spanish/English); programming spans opera to candombe. The Ciudad Vieja’s pedestrian Sarandi begins at its corner.

Getting there

Plaza Independencia hubs the old city; buses city-wide stop at 18 de Julio’s head.
