Jeongnimsa

A monumental Buddhist temple that flourished in Sabi, the Baekje capital, from the 6th century through the Goryeo period, now remembered through its museum site.

At a glance

Jeongnimsa was one of the major Buddhist temples of the Baekje kingdom, built in 538 in the royal capital of Sabi. The temple survived successive dynasties and remained in use until the late Goryeo period. Today, visitors encounter the Jeongnimsaji Museum, which occupies the temple’s former grounds and interprets its rich heritage.

History

Founded in 538, Jeongnimsa rose to prominence as Buddhism became integral to Baekje court life and royal patronage. The temple endured through centuries of Korean history, continuing its spiritual and cultural role into the Goryeo period (918–1392). Its longevity testifies to the deep roots of Buddhist practice on the Korean peninsula. The site gained formal protection as a Historic Site of South Korea in 1983, and in 2015 was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the broader Baekje Historic Areas designation.

What you see

The original temple structures are no longer standing. Instead, the Jeongnimsaji Museum now occupies the archaeological site, presenting artifacts and interpretive materials that illuminate the temple’s former scale and significance within Baekje’s Buddhist landscape.

Cultural significance

Jeongnimsa exemplifies the sophisticated Buddhist culture of the Baekje kingdom and the religious patronage that defined its golden age. As part of the Baekje Historic Areas UNESCO designation, it contributes to our understanding of one of Korea’s Three Kingdoms and the spread of Buddhism throughout East Asia.
