Otto Wagner Court Pavilion (Hofpavillon Hietzing)

Otto Wagner built an entire railway station for one passenger: the Emperor Franz Joseph.

At a glance

Near the gates of Schönbrunn, in Vienna’s Hietzing district, stands a small domed pavilion that was once a private railway station. Otto Wagner designed it around 1899 as part of the new Stadtbahn, the city’s metropolitan line. It served the imperial court alone. Franz Joseph used it only a handful of times. It is now a branch of the Wien Museum.

Key facts

  • Location: Schönbrunner Schloßstraße, Hietzing, 13th district, Vienna
  • Architect: Otto Wagner (with the Stadtbahn project)
  • Built: around 1899
  • Style: Vienna Secession, Jugendstil
  • Today: museum (branch of the Wien Museum)

History

Wagner shaped much of Vienna’s Stadtbahn between 1894 and 1901, designing its stations, bridges and railings as one Secession system. For the stretch near Schönbrunn he added a court pavilion for Franz Joseph and his retinue, set just inside the line from the ordinary station, since demolished.

The Emperor, famously indifferent to novelty, is said to have used it rarely. The pavilion outlived the monarchy and became a museum piece in itself.

What you see

A shallow copper cupola sits over an octagonal waiting room, the whole composed with the calm geometry Wagner brought to the Secession. The detailing is exact: iron brackets, a porte-cochère for the imperial carriage, a scheme of soft greens and gilt. Inside hangs a painted view of Vienna, made so the Emperor could see the city his train would cross. It is Jugendstil at chamber scale.

Practical information
