Former National Westminster Bank
A striking Edwardian Baroque bank designed by Charles Henry Heathcote, now operating as a brasserie and bar. Its opulent interior and distinctive red sandstone façade make it among Manchester’s finest early 20th-century commercial buildings.
At a glance
Built in 1902 for Parr’s Bank on Spring Gardens, this Grade II* listed structure exemplifies the confidence and ornament of Edwardian banking architecture. Red sandstone dominates the exterior, while the interior rivals London’s grandest public spaces in richness and finish.
History
Constructed in 1902, the building served Parr’s Bank as its flagship Manchester branch. Architect Charles Henry Heathcote designed it during a period when banks competed to project stability and prestige through monumental architecture. The building was granted Grade II* listed status on 4 January 1972, recognizing its architectural and historical importance.
What you see
The bold Edwardian Baroque exterior commands attention with red sandstone walls, a prominent corner tower crowned by a cupola, and hooded gables. Ornamental brackets support Doric columns in a display of decorative rather than structural purpose. Vast plate glass windows flood the banking hall with light, each framed by moulded heads, scrolled keystones, and enriched bronze fittings including stained glass lower panels and arched upper lights.
Inside, mahogany panelling adorns the foyer, while the main banking hall astounds with walls of green marble. Original stained glass and Art Nouveau ironwork complete an interior ranked among Manchester’s most opulent commercial spaces of its era.
Cultural significance
The building represents a high point of Edwardian commercial confidence, when banking halls were designed as cathedrals of commerce. Its architectural quality—both exterior and interior—survives as testimony to early 20th-century craft and design ambition in Manchester.
