Teatre Municipal de l’Escorxador

A modernista theatre born from an industrial past, this striking venue transforms a former slaughterhouse into a vibrant cultural space through bold Art Nouveau design.

At a glance

Located in Lleida’s Templers-Instituts quarter, this theatre occupies a building originally designed as a slaughterhouse but reimagined with remarkable modernista-Art Nouveau architecture. Today it operates as a dual-stage cultural venue owned by the city council, hosting experimental and traditional performances.

History

The building was designed by Tarragona-born architect Francesc de Paula Morera i Gatell, whose modernista sensibility gave unexpected elegance to its industrial purpose. During the Spanish Civil War, the structure suffered heavy bombing damage. Following substantial refurbishment and 1990s additions, the theatre opened to the public in 1998, establishing itself as a significant cultural institution in Lleida.

What you see

The building’s exterior displays characteristic modernista ornamentation, unusual for a former slaughterhouse. Inside, Sala 1 presents an Italian-style auditorium seating 310 patrons, while Sala 2 accommodates more experimental work. A third performance space occupies the former convent of Saint Theresa. The Cafè del Teatre adjoins the main building.

Cultural significance

The theatre represents a successful adaptive reuse project, transforming industrial heritage into a functioning arts space. Its modernista architecture stands as testament to early 20th-century Catalan design ambitions, while its dual programming reflects contemporary approaches to performance and cultural participation.
