A focused collection of works by the pioneering Art Nouveau master, featuring paintings, drawings, pastels and personal items spanning his most celebrated Parisian years.
At a glance
The Alfons Mucha Museum presents approximately fifty works spanning multiple media—oil paintings, drawings, pastels, sculpture and photographs. The core of the collection documents Mucha’s Paris period (1887–1904), the era that established his reputation as an innovator of Art Nouveau design and decorative arts.
Please note: this privately operated museum on Panská Street, opened in 1998, is a separate institution from the Mucha Foundation Art Museum, which the Mucha Foundation opened at the Savarin Palace in 2025. The two are distinct and do not share the same collection.
History
Alfons Mucha (1860–1939) rose to international fame during his decades in Paris, where he revolutionized commercial graphic design and fine art. His breakthrough came with theatrical posters for the actress Sarah Bernhardt, whose boldly stylized portraits became iconic works of the era. The museum documents this transformative period through original works and archival materials.
What you see
The collection includes a complete set of Mucha’s celebrated posters, notably those created for Sarah Bernhardt’s theatrical performances. The exhibition also reconstructs the artist’s studio environment and screens a half-hour documentary on his life and artistic practice, providing context for his evolution as a painter and designer.
Cultural significance
Mucha’s work bridges fine art and applied design, embodying the Art Nouveau movement’s integration of aesthetics into everyday life. His theatrical posters elevated commercial graphics to an art form. The museum’s focus on the Paris years captures the moment when Mucha fundamentally altered how artists approached poster design and visual communication in the modern age.
