Rivista is a 1924 painting by Mario Sironi, an Italian Modernist artist active as a painter, sculptor, illustrator, and designer. The work was created during a period when Sironi had already established his mature aesthetic vocabulary.

Sironi’s artistic language is defined by massive, immobile forms rendered in characteristically somber tones. His approach emerged from his early encounter with Divisionist painting under Giacomo Balla’s guidance and his exposure to Expressionist works during visits to Germany between 1908 and 1911. By the 1920s, when Rivista was executed, Sironi had synthesized these influences into a distinctive vision aligned with broader currents of Italian Modernism.

About Mario Sironi

Born in Sassari, Sardinia, in 1885, Sironi initially pursued engineering at the University of Rome before turning to visual art after a nervous breakdown in 1903. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, where he met Balla, who became his first significant teacher. After early work in Paris and travels through Germany, Sironi developed the monumental figural language that would define his career until his death in 1961.
