Civic Museum of Natural History

Milan’s oldest civic museum occupies a neo-Romanesque building designed by Giovanni Ceruti within the historic Porta Venezia gardens, anchoring a modern science education complex.

At a glance

The Civic Museum of Natural History is housed in a purpose-built neo-Romanesque structure completed in 1893 and set within the Public Gardens of Porta Venezia. Today it functions as the centerpiece of the Science Garden, which encompasses two major educational laboratories—Paleolab and Biolab—alongside the Ulrico Hoepli Civic Planetarium.

History

The museum’s origins trace to May 7, 1838, when Milan’s municipal authority officially accepted a landmark donation from nobleman Giuseppe De Cristoforis and botanist Giorgio Jan. Their collections formed the institution’s first nucleus, comprising mineralogical, paleontological, zoological, and botanical specimens alongside scientific instruments and historical books.

Architect Giovanni Ceruti designed the current building between 1888 and 1893, reflecting the city’s commitment to creating a modern civic institution. In 2010, the Museum of Natural History, Aquarium, and Planetarium were unified administratively as the Science Museum Cluster while retaining independent operations.

What you see

The building exemplifies neo-Romanesque style, a popular choice for civic museums during the late 19th century. Its exterior and interior spaces were expressly designed to display and contextualize natural history collections.

Cultural significance

As Milan’s oldest civic museum, the institution represents a key moment in European public science education. The collections honor the 19th-century scientific tradition of aristocratic naturalism and botanical study, while its modern laboratories demonstrate the museum’s evolution toward interactive, contemporary pedagogy.
