GULF OF BOTHNIA, FINLAND & SWEDEN

Kvarken

A narrow strait separating the Bothnian Bay from the Bothnian Sea, where land rises faster than almost anywhere else on Earth and where the waters have long challenged swimmers to test their limits.

At a glance

Kvarken is the constricted passage connecting two arms of the northernmost Gulf of Bothnia. At its widest, the Swedish and Finnish mainlands lie roughly 80 kilometres apart; the outermost islands are separated by only 25 kilometres. Shallow waters—averaging 25 metres deep—characterise the region.

History

The strait has long been a natural boundary and a barrier to transit between Finland and Sweden. Swimming the Kvarken remained unconquered until 24 July 2018, when Lennart Flygare, Pavio Grzelewski and Tore Klingberg successfully swam from Valassaaret on the Finnish side to Holmöarna in Sweden. The crossing took 12 hours and 2 minutes, triumphing over cold water and treacherous currents that had defeated previous attempts.

What you see

The Kvarken landscape is defined by water, islands and the interplay of geology and climate. Valassaaret and Holmöarna—the Finnish and Swedish island clusters that marked the historic crossing—remain the most recognisable landmarks in the strait.

Cultural significance

Kvarken embodies both natural extremity and human endurance. The strait’s remarkable geology—its land rising at nearly 10 millimetres annually, among the fastest rates globally—reveals the continent’s ongoing transformation. The successful 2018 swim represents a modern milestone in testing human limits against one of Northern Europe’s most formidable natural obstacles.

Practical information & getting there

Kvarken is accessible from both Finnish and Swedish sides of the Gulf of Bothnia. Regular ferry services operate between ports in Finland and Sweden. The region’s islands can be visited by boat. Swimming is not recommended for inexperienced swimmers due to cold water temperatures and powerful currents.
