Royal Natal National Park
A dramatic sanctuary in the Drakensberg Mountains where soaring rock walls, thundering waterfalls, and ancient San rock paintings tell stories of landscape and survival.
At a glance
Royal Natal National Park spans 80.94 square kilometres in KwaZulu-Natal province. Managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife as a Provincial Park, it forms part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a transfrontier conservation area shared with Lesotho.
History
The Drakensberg Mountains were once the primary hunting ground of the San people. Although the San no longer inhabit the region, they left an indelible record of their presence and activities through remarkable rock paintings preserved throughout the landscape.
What you see
The park’s centrepiece is the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, a sheer rock wall stretching 5 kilometres and rising up to 1,200 metres. Mont-Aux-Sources peak marks the source of both the Orange and Tugela rivers. The spectacular Tugela Falls plunges 948 metres in a series of cascades. A distinctive and accessible feature is the “Policeman’s Helmet,” a prominent rock formation favoured by hikers exploring the park’s varied terrain.
Cultural significance
Royal Natal holds profound importance as a window into San heritage and artistic expression. The rock paintings document ancient hunting practices and spiritual beliefs. The park’s inclusion in a UNESCO World Heritage Site and transfrontier conservation area underscores its regional and international ecological value.
