At a glance

Bordeaux, the “Port of the Moon”, takes its name from the crescent bend of the river Garonne on which it lies. In the 18th century, enriched by Atlantic trade and wine, the city rebuilt itself in pale stone with monumental squares, quays and uniform classical façades, an urban ensemble of the Enlightenment of exceptional coherence and scale. It remains an outstanding example of an 18th-century port city. Bordeaux, Port of the Moon, was inscribed by UNESCO in 2007.

History

Roman Burdigala and a medieval English possession, Bordeaux reached its golden age in the 18th century, when wealth from wine and Atlantic commerce funded a sweeping transformation. Intendants of the crown swept away the medieval walls and laid out broad quays, avenues and squares; the royal architects Jacques Gabriel and his son Ange-Jacques Gabriel gave the riverfront its monumental Place de la Bourse.

This Enlightenment city of pale limestone, more extensive than almost any other of its kind, survived later centuries with its harmony intact. A careful 21st-century restoration of the quays added the Miroir d’eau and brought back the riverfront, reinforcing the qualities recognised by the World Heritage listing.

What you see

The Place de la Bourse opens to the river in a graceful curve of matching pavilions; facing it, the Miroir d’eau alternates a thin sheet of water and drifting mist, reflecting the façades. From here the 18th-century city unfolds in the Grand Théâtre, the cours and the long classical frontages along the Garonne.

The pale stone, cut from local limestone, gives the whole city a unity of colour and line that is its signature.
