Casa Navàs, Reus
A merchant’s house on the main square whose interior survives almost exactly as it opened in 1907.
At a glance
Casa Navàs faces the Plaça del Mercadal, the main square of Reus, and it is one of the great works of Catalan Modernisme. Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1850–1923) built it between 1901 and 1907 for the textile merchant Joaquim Navàs, combining a shop on the ground floor with the family’s home above. The stone façade is severe and grand; the real wonder is inside, where the original decoration survives almost untouched.
Key facts
- Location: Plaça del Mercadal, Reus
- Architect: Lluís Domènech i Montaner
- Built: 1901–1907
- Style: Catalan Modernisme
- Note: the corner tower was destroyed by bombing in 1938
History
Domènech i Montaner, born in Barcelona and a leader of the Modernista movement, gave Reus a town palace to rival anything in the capital. Joaquim Navàs ran a draper’s business below while his family lived above, and the architect gathered the best craftsmen of the day to finish the rooms.
In 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, an air raid destroyed the slender corner tower and the stepped crown of the building, which were never rebuilt. Yet the interior came through almost intact, and Casa Navàs is now counted as the most completely preserved Modernista interior in Europe, open for guided visits.
What you see
From the square you see a powerful stone front, its arches and windows carved with floral Modernista ornament, and the flat, scarred top where the tower once rose. Step inside and the mood changes completely. The reception rooms keep their original mosaic floors, stained glass, carved woodwork, marquetry furniture and painted ceilings, designed as a single ensemble.
Light passes through coloured glass onto inlaid floors; flowers and vines run across walls and furniture alike. Because almost nothing was lost or replaced, the house shows what a wealthy Modernista interior actually looked and felt like, not a reconstruction but the thing itself.
