Cliffs of Moher

The Cliffs of Moher are sea cliffs on the western edge of the Burren region in County Clare, Ireland, stretching for approximately 14 kilometres along the Atlantic coastline and rising to a maximum height of 214 metres at Knockardakin. Among the most visited natural attractions in Ireland, the cliffs form part of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark and represent one of Europe’s most dramatic coastal landscapes.

History

The cliffs derive their name from the Irish “Mothar,” referring to a ruined fort that once occupied the headland before being demolished for stone during the Napoleonic Wars. O’Brien’s Tower, the most recognisable structure on the clifftop, was built in 1835 by local landlord Sir Cornelius O’Brien as an observation tower for visiting tourists, making it one of Ireland’s earliest purpose-built tourist facilities. The cliffs have been a site of human settlement since at least the Iron Age, with evidence of an ancient promontory fort at Moher Point.

What to See

The visitor centre is built partially underground into the hillside to minimise visual impact on the landscape. The coastal path allows walking the full length of the cliffs above the churning Atlantic surf. O’Brien’s Tower offers elevated views on clear days extending to the Aran Islands, the Twelve Bens of Connemara, and as far as Kerry. Puffins, razorbills, guillemots, and thousands of kittiwakes nest in the cliff faces from spring through summer.

Getting There

The Cliffs of Moher are located near the village of Liscannor, approximately 75 kilometres from Limerick and 130 kilometres from Galway. Bus Éireann operates services from both cities. The Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk begins in Doolin to the north and ends at Hag’s Head to the south. A car park at the visitor centre is the most practical access point.
