Saturnia Thermal Baths

In the rolling Maremma hills of southern Tuscany, natural sulphurous springs emerge from the earth at a constant 37.5°C, cascading down a series of pale travertine terraces into shallow turquoise pools open freely to the public around the clock. The Cascate del Mulino at Saturnia is one of Italy’s most spectacular natural thermal sites.

History

The thermal waters of Saturnia have been known since antiquity. According to Roman legend, the god Saturn hurled a thunderbolt to end a war among men, and where it struck the earth, the hot springs arose. The nearby town of Saturnia itself is one of the oldest in Italy, with Etruscan and Roman remains attesting to continuous habitation for over two millennia. Roman baths were built over the springs, traces of which can still be seen, and the waters were attributed healing properties for skin conditions and respiratory ailments. A private spa resort, the Terme di Saturnia, occupies the hillside above the free public falls.

What to See

The Cascate del Mulino — the free natural falls — are the main draw, a sequence of travertine lip pools where warm water flows continuously regardless of season or weather. Early morning visits reward with mist rising from the turquoise water and solitude before the crowds arrive. The ancient town of Saturnia, a short drive away, preserves Etruscan walls, a Roman gateway, and a small archaeological museum.

Getting There

Saturnia is in the Maremma region, about 50 kilometres east of Grosseto. There is no public transport directly to the falls; a car is essential. From Rome allow approximately two and a half hours via the Via Aurelia; from Florence about two hours. Parking near the falls fills early in summer.
