Barcelona Cathedral
The Gothic heart of the old city, guarded by thirteen geese and dedicated to a teenage martyr.
At a glance
The Catedral de Santa Eulàlia rises at the centre of the Barri Gòtic, the seat of the Archbishop of Barcelona and the spiritual core of the medieval city. Most of it was built between 1298 and 1420 in Catalan Gothic; the soaring neo-Gothic facade that faces the square is much later, finished in 1913 to a fifteenth-century design. Inside, a leafy cloister keeps thirteen white geese — one for each year of the life of Santa Eulàlia, the city’s young co-patron.

History
A church has stood here since the Roman and Romanesque city; the Gothic cathedral begun in 1298 rose over those foundations. Work ran for more than a century, and for centuries afterward the main front stayed bare. Only in the late 1800s and early 1900s, funded by a local banker, was the pinnacled facade added, giving the cathedral the silhouette visitors photograph today.
What you see
The interior is wide and dim, with a raised choir, a crypt holding Santa Eulàlia’s tomb, and side chapels paid for by medieval guilds. The cloister is the surprise: palm and magnolia, a mossy fountain, and the famous geese. Lifts climb to the roof, where you can walk among the spires above the Gothic Quarter.

- Roof: a separate ticket for the terraces — worth it.
