National Technical Museum

Prague’s largest institution dedicated to preserving the history of technology in the Czech Republic, housing 15% of its vast collection in permanent exhibitions alongside extensive archives and a dedicated railway museum.

At a glance

The National Technical Museum (NTM) is the Czech Republic’s primary repository for technological heritage. Founded in 1908, it occupies a purpose-built location adjacent to Letná Park since 1941. The museum maintains approximately 250,000 books and 3,500 linear meters of archival material, presenting a selected 15% through major exhibitions. A railway museum annex, opened in 2001, displays around 100 railway vehicles.

History

The NTM’s origins trace to the professional engineering school established in Prague in 1717, whose collections were gradually expanded through the polytechnic institute founded in 1806. The Czech Industrial Museum, created by Vojtěch Náprstek in 1874, formed a direct predecessor; portions of his collections were later integrated into the NTM.

The museum closed for extensive renovations in September 2006, with reopening initially planned for February 2008. The project extended to February 2011. Flood damage in 2002 had destroyed approximately 200 cubic meters of documents stored off-site, requiring restoration efforts that continued into 2013.

What you see

The museum’s main building, designed as a dedicated repository adjacent to Letná Park, displays significant technological artifacts across curated exhibitions. Among its most notable pieces is the aircraft flown by Jan Kašpar from Pardubice to Velká Chuchle in 1911, donated to the museum and remaining on permanent display. The railway museum, a separate facility, showcases a comprehensive collection of locomotives and carriages spanning Czech railway history.

Cultural significance

The NTM serves as the definitive institution for understanding Czech technological achievement and industrial development. Its role evolved from 18th-century educational collections into a modern research and exhibition center, reflecting both national engineering tradition and technological innovation across centuries.
