Varakhsha
An ancient Sogdian city that served as capital of the Bukhar Khudahs before succumbing to the Muslim conquest of Transoxiana.
At a glance
Varakhsha stands 39 kilometers northwest of modern Bukhara, in the heart of Central Asia’s historic Sogdian oasis. Founded in the 1st century BCE, it rose to prominence as the seat of Sogdian dynastic power. The site remained largely unknown to European scholarship until British archaeologists began systematic investigation in the 1820s.
History
The city emerged during the early centuries of the Common Era as a major settlement in the Bukhara oasis. Varakhsha became the capital of the Sokdian rulers known as the Bukhar Khudahs, who dominated the region’s political and economic life. The Islamic conquest of Transoxiana brought decisive change; Varakhsha never fully recovered from this upheaval and gradually declined into obscurity.
Western knowledge of the site began only in the early 19th century, when British archaeologists initiated excavations. This work established Varakhsha as the first Sogdian archaeological site to enter European scholarly discourse.
What you see
The archaeological remains at Varakhsha reflect the material culture of ancient Sogdia, though detailed architectural description requires on-site investigation.
Cultural significance
Varakhsha holds exceptional importance for understanding Sogdian civilization, a crucial hub of the Silk Road. As a royal capital, it embodies the political structures and urban planning of pre-Islamic Central Asia. Its archaeological prominence in European discovery makes it foundational to modern knowledge of the region’s ancient past.
