Shwedagon Pagoda
Myanmar’s most sacred Buddhist monument, this gilded stupa rises 112 metres above Yangon, said to house relics of four previous Buddhas and dominating the city’s skyline by law and by faith.
At a glance
The Shwedagon is a gilded stupa of immense spiritual and architectural significance. Standing 112 metres tall on Singuttara Hill—itself 51 metres high—the pagoda reaches 170 metres above sea level. Its prominence is enshrined in Yangon’s building code, which limits all other structures to 127 metres, preserving its visual dominion over the city.
History
The pagoda is believed to contain relics of extraordinary Buddhist significance: the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Koṇāgamana, a piece of the robe of Kassapa, and eight strands of hair from Gautama Buddha. These relics elevate the Shwedagon to the highest tier of sacred Buddhist sites, drawing pilgrims and devotees for centuries.
What you see
The stupa’s gilded exterior catches light dramatically across Yangon’s landscape. Its placement atop Singuttara Hill amplifies its visual and spiritual impact. The monument’s height—both absolute and relative to modern regulations—makes it an unmistakable landmark visible across much of the city.
Cultural significance
The Shwedagon is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar. Its legendary relics and architectural prominence have made it a symbol of Burmese Buddhism and national identity. The city’s deliberate zoning restrictions underscore its irreplaceable place in Yangon’s physical and spiritual geography.
