Church of Our Lady of Consolation and Saint Francis

A Gothic Revival shrine in West Sussex dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, crowned by papal decree in 1893.

At a glance

This Grade II listed Roman Catholic church stands at the corner of Steyning Road and Park Lane, east of the A24. Built between 1875 and 1876, it represents Victorian religious architecture at its most earnest.

History

John Aloysius Crawley designed the original structure in 1875. The shrine gained international recognition when Pope Leo XIII issued a pontifical decree of coronation on 12 July 1893, formally recognizing the veneration of Our Lady of Consolation. Subsequent expansions—designed by Frederick Arthur Walters in 1896 and completed again in 1964—reflected the church’s growing importance as a place of pilgrimage.

What you see

The church exemplifies Gothic Revival design, with characteristic pointed arches and vertical emphasis. Crawley’s original work provides the architectural foundation, while Walters’s additions of 1896 extended its capacity and refined its spatial arrangement. The 1964 modifications responded to mid-twentieth-century liturgical needs.

Cultural significance

The shrine holds particular significance within English Catholic devotional life. The papal coronation of 1893 elevated its status from local parish church to recognized place of Marian veneration. For pilgrims, the church represents continuity between Victorian-era Catholicism and modern faith practice in England.
