The Church of St. Martin was a Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, serving the village of Borschemich in the Erkelenz district of North Rhine-Westphalia. Constructed between 1906 and 1907, it replaced a medieval predecessor on the same site.
History
The church was designed by architect Heinrich Renard and completed in 1907. It immediately assumed the pastoral and spiritual functions of a medieval church that stood nearby, which was demolished upon its completion.
In 2014, the church was deconsecrated as the village faced planned removal. In February 2016, it was demolished as part of the comprehensive destruction of Borschemich itself—cleared to permit expansion of the Garzweiler surface mine, one of Europe’s largest open-pit lignite operations. A smaller replacement church with the same dedication was subsequently built in the relocated settlement of Neu-Borschemich between 2013 and 2015.
