San Ignacio Miní
A Jesuit mission founded in the early 17th century, San Ignacio Miní stands as a testament to the spiritual and architectural ambitions of colonial Paraguay.
At a glance
San Ignacio Miní is a ruined Jesuit mission in Misiones Province, northern Argentina, approximately 60 kilometers north of Posadas. Founded in 1610, it represents one of the largest and most ambitious reductions established by the Society of Jesus in colonial South America.
History
The Jesuits established San Ignacio Miní in 1610 as part of their mission system in the Province of Paraguay, a vast colonial territory administered by Spain. The reduction was designed to gather indigenous populations into organized Christian communities under religious guidance and Spanish authority. For more than a century, the mission thrived as a center of conversion, agriculture, and trade until the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish territories in 1767.

The site preserves substantial stone foundations and walls from the mission complex, including remains of the principal church and residential structures. The architecture reflects colonial Spanish and indigenous construction methods and aesthetic traditions of the period.
Cultural significance
