Rocca di Angera

A fortified castle on the shores of Lake Maggiore, the Rocca di Angera stands among Lombardy’s best-preserved medieval strongholds, its crenellated walls reflected in the water below.

At a glance

The Rocca di Angera is a medieval fortress overlooking the southern banks of Lake Maggiore. Now owned by the Borromeo family, it features a medieval garden, a notable doll museum, and important examples of civic medieval art. The castle remains one of the region’s architectural jewels.

History

Originally held by the Visconti family, the fortress passed into the hands of the Borromeo family in 1449, a date that marked a pivotal moment in its preservation and cultural development. The Borromeo family has maintained ownership of the castle to the present day, ensuring its continuity as a significant heritage site.

What you see

Visitors encounter impressive crenellated walls that define the castle’s defensive character. The courtyard is surrounded by structures that reflect centuries of development, while the medieval garden adds period atmosphere to the complex. Interior rooms display the layers of the castle’s occupation and use over time.

Cultural significance

The Sala di Giustizia (Hall of Justice) contains one of the earliest surviving examples of secular medieval painting in Italy. The castle’s collections—including the Doll Museum and the Sala delle Maioliche (Hall of Majolica), which holds over 300 pieces of fine ceramics—illustrate the refined taste and cultural life of its former residents. These treasures make the Rocca a valuable window into medieval and Renaissance domestic arts.
