Pavia

A medieval university city 34 kilometres south of Milan, Pavia stands at a strategic crossing of the Ticino river and preserves a rich artistic heritage spanning from Roman times to the Renaissance.

At a glance

Pavia originated in the age of the Gallic tribes and later became the Roman municipium of Ticinum. In the Middle Ages it served as capital of the Lombard kingdom. Since 1361, the city has been home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, shaping its identity as a centre of learning and culture.

History

The site was first inhabited by Gallic tribes before Roman forces established the municipium of Ticinum. Its position on the Ticino river, just north of the confluence with the Po, made it strategically valuable throughout antiquity.

Medieval Pavia reached its zenith as capital of the Lombard kingdom. The establishment of the university in 1361 cemented its cultural prestige and transformed it into a destination for scholars across Europe.

What you see

The Visconti Castle represents medieval power, while the Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro stands as a masterwork of religious architecture. The Duomo and Basilica of San Michele Maggiore showcase the city’s architectural ambitions across centuries.

The Pinacoteca Malaspina houses significant works of art. The Covered Bridge, spanning the Ticino, exemplifies Renaissance engineering and remains iconic to the city’s skyline.

Cultural significance

Pavia’s layered history—from Celtic settlement to Roman city to medieval capital—makes it a vital node in understanding northern Italian development. The university’s presence since the 14th century has continuously attracted intellectuals and fostered artistic patronage.

The concentration of religious and civic monuments reflects the city’s importance as both a spiritual and political centre during the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
