Olympic Stadium

Built to host the 1928 Summer Olympics, Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium remains a working venue for athletics, sports events and concerts, now restored to its original modernist form.

At a glance

A multi-purpose stadium originally designed with a capacity of 31,600 for the Olympic Games. After decades of expansion and use by Ajax football club, it was comprehensively renovated in the 1990s to restore its 1928 character and athletic function. Today it houses a sports museum dedicated to Olympic history.

History

The stadium was constructed to serve as the main venue for Amsterdam’s 1928 Summer Olympics. Following the opening of rival stadium De Kuip in Rotterdam in 1937, local authorities expanded the Olympic Stadium’s capacity to 64,000 by adding a second ring. Ajax football club used the stadium for international matches from its early years until 1996, when the club moved to the newly completed Amsterdam Arena (now Johan Cruyff Arena). In 1987, the stadium received designation as a Dutch national monument. Comprehensive renovation began in 1996, reversing the 1937 expansion and returning the structure to its original 1928 design, with capacity reduced to 22,288.

What you see

The restored stadium reflects 1920s modernist design principles. The removal of the 1937 second ring during renovation exposed the original architectural vision. The venue is configured for track and field athletics, with facilities suited to competitive sport rather than the hybrid football-athletics use of the intervening decades.

Cultural significance

As the principal Olympic venue of 1928, the stadium embodies Netherlands’ sporting heritage and modernist architecture. Its restoration prioritized historical authenticity over commercial capacity, affirming its role as a cultural monument rather than merely a functional sports facility.
