Olgino
A former dacha village on the Neva Bay coast, Olgino preserves the legacy of St. Petersburg’s prosperous suburban retreat culture. Named for the wife of a Swedish count, it became home to artists and intellectuals before its incorporation into Leningrad.
At a glance
Olgino occupies a strategic position on the southwestern shore of the Neva Bay, between the districts of Lakhta and Lisy Nos. The area emerged as a fashionable dacha village in the early 20th century, attracting prominent cultural figures seeking retreat from the Russian capital.
History
The Neva Bay coast came under the ownership of Count Stenbock-Fermor, a nobleman of Swedish descent, during the mid-19th century. He named the area after his wife, Olga, establishing its enduring identity. By the early 20th century, Olgino had flourished into a desirable dacha community. The poet Korney Chukovsky, celebrated children’s author and literary critic, made his home here. The village retained this character until January 1963, when it was formally incorporated into Leningrad as the city expanded northward.
What you see
The district retains traces of its dacha-era development, with period architecture reflecting early 20th-century suburban aesthetics. Contemporary features include the gated residential community “Versailles North,” which represents later residential development within the historic district.
Cultural significance
