MONTREAL, CANADA · 19TH CENTURY
Notre-Dame Basilica

A masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture in Old Montreal, whose jewel-toned interior and ornate wooden carvings attract millions of visitors annually.

At a glance

Notre-Dame Basilica stands at 110 Notre-Dame Street West, adjacent to the Saint-Sulpice Seminary and facing Place d’Armes square. Pope John Paul II elevated it to Minor Basilica status in 1982 via Pontifical decree Qui Semper, signed by Cardinal Agostino Casaroli on 15 February. The basilica welcomes approximately 11 million visitors annually, ranking among North America’s most visited monuments.

History

The basilica’s formal elevation to Minor Basilica status marked a significant moment in its spiritual significance. In 2023, international recognition came when Angi named it the 6th most beautiful building in the world, based on TripAdvisor reviews—a ranking that placed it above renowned structures while acknowledging the supremacy of Notre-Dame de Paris and Barcelona’s Sagrada Família.

What you see

The interior is among the world’s most dramatic ecclesiastical spaces. Vaults sweep overhead in deep blue, studded with golden stars, while the sanctuary glows in layers of blue, azure, red, purple, silver, and gold. Hundreds of intricate wooden carvings animate the walls and pillars, complemented by religious statues positioned throughout.

Stained glass windows depart from biblical convention—they narrate Montreal’s religious history rather than scripture. A Casavant Frères pipe organ, built in 1891, dominates the acoustic landscape: four keyboards feed 99 stops through electromagnetic action, 7,000 individual pipes, and an adjustable combination system, with a full pedal board completing the instrument.

Cultural significance

The basilica represents a defining achievement in North American Gothic Revival. Its chromatic intensity and narrative stained glass create a visual theology unique to Montreal’s religious heritage, while the organ remains a technical marvel of 19th-century organ-building craft.
