Museum of the Neapolitan Twentieth Century
Established in 2010 at Castel Sant’Elmo, this museum traces nearly a century of artistic innovation in Naples through over 170 works by 90 artists, from Futurism to contemporary practice.
At a glance
The Museum of the Neapolitan Twentieth Century occupies Castel Sant’Elmo on Piazza d’Armi. It presents publicly owned works alongside donations from artists, their heirs, and long-term loans from collectors. The collection spans movements and artistic tendencies that shaped the city’s cultural landscape across nearly one hundred years.
History
Opened in 2010, the museum was conceived as a work in progress—an evolving institution committed to documenting Neapolitan artistic culture with scholarly rigor. Its chronological arrangement begins with the Secession of the twenty-three in 1909 and early Futurism (1910–1914), continuing through the Circumvisionist movement and second Futurism of the 1920s–1930s.
The narrative extends through interwar periods and postwar experiences from 1948 to 1958, encompassing the ‘South’ Group, Neorealism, the M.A.C., Informal abstraction, and Group ’58, before concluding with artistic practices from the 1970s onward.
What you see
The museum’s installation within the historic castle setting creates dialogue between historic fortification and twentieth-century vision. Site-specific works by established artists—including Eugenio Giliberti, Giancarlo Neri, Mimmo Paladino, Sergio Fermariello, and Alberto Di Fabio—occupy the castle spaces alongside rotating displays of the core collection.
Additional installations feature winners of the annual “A work for il Castello” competition, established in 2011 to support emerging artists. Past recipients include Daniela Di Maro, Rosy Rox, Gian Maria Tosatti, the collective Le Jardin, Claudio Beorchia, and Paolo Puddu.
Cultural significance
The museum has reinforced Castel Sant’Elmo’s role as a research and experimentation center for contemporary culture. Beyond exhibiting historical movements, it hosts discussions on contemporary artistic questions and maintains an active program supporting emerging practice in Naples.
