A private mineral collection of over 12,000 specimens, four generations in the making, showcasing the geological wealth of the Carpathian Basin and beyond.
At a glance
The Museum of Minerals occupies a central position in Siófok, Hungary’s largest resort town on Lake Balaton. Three thousand of the museum’s 12,000-piece collection are on public display, representing one of Europe’s most significant private mineral assemblies. The institution holds the protection of the Hungarian National Heritage label.
History
The Kövecses Family began collecting minerals four generations ago, accumulating specimens that would eventually form the foundation of this museum. The collection opened to the public in 1986, the same year it received Hungarian State protection as a national heritage site. This designation was renewed and extended in 2016, affirming the collection’s cultural and scientific importance.
In 2001, museum owner and founder Lajos Kövecses-Varga made a significant mineralogical discovery: a previously unknown mineral species, named kochsandorite. The first samples of this newly identified mineral remain on display within the museum.
What you see
The museum presents minerals predominantly from the Carpathian Basin, with particularly strong holdings from Transylvanian mining areas. Outstanding specimens from distant regions of the world complement the Central European focus, providing a global perspective on mineral diversity and formation.
Cultural significance
The collection documents both the geological character of the Carpathian region and the dedication of a single family to mineralogy across multiple generations. The discovery of kochsandorite underscores the ongoing scientific value of private collections and their potential to advance our understanding of mineral species.
