Maritime Museum
A museum dedicated to the maritime heritage of Malacca, home to a striking full-scale replica of the legendary Flor do Mar and artifacts spanning centuries of regional trade and colonial encounter.
At a glance
The Maritime Museum occupies two phases of exhibition space in Malacca City, documenting the port’s pivotal role in Southeast Asian maritime history. The centerpiece is a 34-metre-high replica of the Flor do Mar, the Portuguese flagship lost in 1511, rendered at 36 metres long and 8 metres wide.
History
The museum was officially opened to the public by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on 13 June 1994, launching phase one. Phase two opened on 23 May 1998, housed in the former Guthrie building, and was inaugurated by the State Committee for Tourism, Culture and Environment Chairman Poh Ah Tiam.
What you see
The dominant feature is the towering replica of the Flor do Mar, which dominates the museum’s spatial and interpretive landscape. Surrounding galleries contain exhibits, artifacts, and historical documents tracing Malacca’s merchant networks from early medieval times through the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial periods to Malaysian independence.
Cultural significance
The museum articulates how maritime control of Malacca was essential to establishing regional dominance in Asian trade. Its collections underscore the port’s transformation from a sultanate emporium to a contested colonial prize, illustrating the economic and geopolitical forces that shaped the Indian Ocean world.
