Located in the Bukit Chagar suburb, the station operates as both a domestic rail hub and an international crossing point, handling passengers bound for Singapore via the Johor–Singapore Causeway. The complex integrates multiple rail operators and serves as the planned main bus terminal for the city.
History
The station opened on 21 October 2010, replacing the former Johor Bahru railway station situated 200 metres to the south. Construction was part of broader infrastructure development known as the Southern Integrated Gateway, which connected the station to the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex.
Service expansions followed over the subsequent decade. From January to June 2022, the station closed to accommodate the Gemas–Johor Bahru electrification and double-tracking project. Rail services resumed in July 2022 when new tracks between Johor Bahru and Kempas Baru became operational. On 12 December 2025, KTM ETS services began operating from the station, further enhancing connectivity.
