At a glance

Durham Cathedral is widely regarded as the finest Norman (Romanesque) building in England, raised between 1093 and 1133 to house the relics of Saint Cuthbert. Its massive piers and, above all, its ribbed vault mark a decisive step toward Gothic architecture. Beside it stands Durham Castle, a Norman stronghold of the prince-bishops, now part of the university. Together they crown a rocky peninsula almost encircled by the River Wear. The cathedral and castle were inscribed by UNESCO in 1986.

  • Cathedral built: 1093–1133, the masterpiece of Norman architecture in England
  • Ribbed vault: an early large-scale rib vault, a step toward Gothic building
  • Saint Cuthbert: the cathedral was built to hold the relics of the Northumbrian saint
  • The Venerable Bede: the early medieval scholar is also buried here
  • Durham Castle: a Norman castle of the prince-bishops, now a university college

History

The community of Saint Cuthbert, fleeing Viking raids with the saint’s body, settled at Durham in 995 on its defensible loop of the Wear. After the Norman Conquest, the new cathedral was begun in 1093 and largely finished by 1133 with extraordinary speed, giving it a rare unity. Its builders dared to vault the whole interior in stone using ribs, a technique that would transform European architecture.

The bishops of Durham were also prince-bishops, wielding near-royal powers on the Scottish border, and their castle guarded the peninsula beside the church. The shrine of Saint Cuthbert made Durham a great place of pilgrimage; the tomb of the scholar Bede lies in the Galilee Chapel at the west end.

What you see

Inside, the great drum piers, carved with bold geometric patterns, march down the nave beneath the pioneering ribbed vault. The shrine of Saint Cuthbert lies behind the high altar, and Bede’s tomb in the Galilee Chapel. The cathedral’s three towers are a landmark for miles across County Durham.

Across Palace Green the castle keep and great hall complete the medieval ensemble, with views down to the wooded riverbanks below.
