Cathedral of the Assumption

The mother church of the Metropolitan Province of Cashel and seat of the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly, built on the site of earlier chapels after the archdiocese relocated from the Rock of Cashel in the late eighteenth century.

At a glance

The Cathedral of the Assumption serves as the cathedra of the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly and is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in County Tipperary. Thurles became the ecclesiastical centre of the archdiocese after James Butler II relocated the archbishop’s residence and cathedra here, departing from the historic cathedral at the Rock of Cashel.

History

Following the English Reformation, many archdiocesan assets were appropriated by the established church, including the cathedral at the Rock of Cashel. The archdiocese required a new centre. In 1774, James Butler II was appointed Archbishop by the Holy See and chose Thurles as his residence, moving the cathedra from Cashel. The cathedral was built on the site of earlier chapels—the only Roman Catholic churches in Thurles at that time. His successors have continued to lead from Thurles ever since.
