Cathedral Basilica of Eger
A neoclassical cathedral of monumental proportions, crowned by a soaring dome and anchored by two bell towers at its rear. Built in the early 19th century, it remains the seat of the Archdiocese of Eger.

Eger Cathedral is a three-nave basilica that dominates the skyline of the city’s main square. Its architectural vocabulary draws from ancient Greece: the eastern porch portal mimics a Greek temple, while monumental Corinthian columns, each 17 meters tall, support the facade.
History
Archbishop János László Pyrker commissioned the cathedral in 1831, a moment of religious confidence and civic renewal in post-Napoleonic Hungary. Architect József Hild designed and oversaw construction through 1837. The building rose quickly, anchoring the city’s Catholic identity for nearly two centuries.

The cathedral’s design distills Enlightenment taste into stone and plaster. The monumental entrance faces east and bears statues of St. Stephen, St. Ladislaus, and Saints Peter and Paul—a theological program in sculpture. Inside, the three-nave plan offers generous spatial volume; the transept intersects between the central nave and the chancel, creating the traditional cruciform footprint. The dome, the building’s crowning gesture, dominates both exterior and interior experience through rich decoration.
