Auberge Ravoux
The modest inn where Vincent van Gogh spent his final 70 days, creating a burst of masterworks before his death in 1890.
At a glance
This unassuming auberge in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise preserves the room where the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh lodged during the last weeks of his life. Now restored as a museum, it stands as one of the most poignant sites in art history.
History
Van Gogh arrived in Auvers in May 1890, seeking solitude and medical supervision under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet. He took a room at the Auberge Ravoux, where he remained for 70 days. During this feverish period, he produced over 80 paintings and 64 sketches—a remarkable creative outpouring. On 27 July 1890, he shot himself in the chest and died two days later on 29 July. The auberge has since been restored and opened to the public as a museum.
What you see
The auberge retains its modest character as a village inn. Van Gogh’s room—small, plain, and modest—has been carefully restored and is the focal point for visitors. The simple furnishings and austere walls evoke the conditions under which he worked during his final days.
Cultural significance
The Auberge Ravoux holds immense cultural weight as the setting of one of art history’s most tragic and transformative periods. Van Gogh’s stay here marks the culmination of his artistic genius and his personal struggles. The works created in this room rank among his most celebrated and continue to captivate audiences worldwide.
