Atlantic Greyhound Bus Terminal
A Streamline Moderne landmark that once connected Savannah to the nation’s intercity bus network, now reimagined as a restaurant and bar.
At a glance
Built in 1938 and designed by architect George D. Brown, this bus terminal exemplifies the sleek, forward-looking Streamline Moderne style. Located at 109 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, it served intercity travelers until 1965, when changing transportation patterns led to its closure. The structure was recognized for its architectural and historical significance when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
History
The terminal opened in 1938 as Savannah’s gateway for intercity bus travel, enabling residents to reach distant cities by coach. It operated for nearly three decades before closing in 1965 as automobile travel and other transit modes reshaped American mobility. John Marisano acquired the building, and since 2018 it has operated as The Grey Bar & Restaurant, giving the historic structure a new commercial purpose.
What you see
George D. Brown’s design captures the essence of Streamline Moderne, an architectural movement that celebrated speed, efficiency, and progress through curved forms and horizontal lines. The building’s aesthetic reflects the optimism of 1930s transportation design, drawing on the visual language of trains and ocean liners to express modernity and movement.
Cultural significance
The Atlantic Greyhound Bus Terminal represents a pivotal era in American travel, when intercity buses were a primary means of long-distance transportation for working people and travelers. Its preservation honors Savannah’s role in this network and the democratic spirit of accessible travel that defined mid-twentieth-century America.
