Abbey of Saint Gall
A foundational Benedictine monastery whose library remains one of Europe’s oldest and most significant collections, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At a glance
The Abbey of Saint Gall stands as a landmark of European monastic culture. Founded in 719 by Saint Othmar at the site of Saint Gall’s hermitage, it evolved from a remote religious sanctuary into one of Christendom’s most influential abbeys. The complex shaped the city that surrounds it and preserves centuries of spiritual and intellectual achievement.
History
Saint Othmar established the monastery in 719 on land already sacred to Saint Gall, an Irish missionary who had withdrawn there as a hermit. By the 9th century, the abbey had grown wealthy and powerful enough to become an independent principality—a status it maintained through the 13th century. For over a thousand years, it remained one of Europe’s foremost Benedictine centers, attracting scholars and pilgrims alike.
Secularization came around 1800. In 1848, the abbey church was repurposed as St. Gallen Cathedral, the seat of the newly established Diocese of Saint Gallen. The site received UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1983, recognizing its outstanding universal value.
What you see
The abbey precinct reflects layers of medieval and later development. The former abbey church, now the cathedral, anchors the complex alongside surviving monastic buildings that speak to centuries of Benedictine life and labor.
Cultural significance
The Abbey of Saint Gall’s library is among the world’s oldest monastic collections, preserving medieval manuscripts of immense historical and artistic importance. The abbey itself was instrumental in the intellectual and spiritual development of medieval Europe. Its influence extended far beyond Switzerland—the abbey helped shape European learning, faith, and urban culture during the Middle Ages and beyond.
