Bauhaus-Archiv Museum für Gestaltung
A purpose-built archive and museum dedicated to the Bauhaus movement, housing one of the world’s most significant collections of design and architecture from the school’s transformative years.
At a glance
The Bauhaus-Archiv preserves the legacy of the influential Bauhaus school through an extensive collection of works, documents, and materials. Its distinctive modernist building, completed in 1979, stands as a physical embodiment of the design principles it documents. The archive occupies a prominent position along the Landwehrkanal in Berlin’s Tiergarten district.
History
The archive was founded in Darmstadt in 1960 with the support of Walter Gropius and other Bauhaus members. As the collection grew, Berlin emerged as an alternative location. The Berlin Senate secured space and funding in the early 1970s, and the museum opened a temporary location in 1971.
The construction of a permanent home proved complex. Original plans underwent significant revision due to site constraints, regulatory changes, and financial pressures. Work resumed in 1976, with construction completed in 1979. In 1997, the building received official monumental protection status.
What you see
The building’s design reflects modernist principles through clean lines and functional geometry. The characteristic roof—one of the few elements preserved from Walter Gropius’s original concept drawings—defines the structure’s visual identity. Its waterside setting along the Landwehrkanal enhances the architectural composition.
Cultural significance
The Bauhaus-Archiv serves as the primary institutional guardian of the school’s intellectual and artistic contributions to twentieth-century design. It holds irreplaceable documents, photographs, furniture, and artworks that illustrate the Bauhaus approach to uniting art, craft, and industrial production. The museum’s collection educates visitors about this pivotal movement’s influence on modern architecture, graphic design, and everyday objects.
