The Pineta of Terzigno
The Pineta of Terzigno is a coastal pine forest reserve on the lower slopes of Vesuvius, within the municipality of Terzigno in the Metropolitan City of Naples. Sheltered between the volcanic terrain of the Vesuvius National Park and the agricultural plains of Campania, the pineta offers a rare pocket of Mediterranean woodland just 20 kilometres east of Naples city centre.

Overview
The Pineta of Terzigno is a wooded area characterised by umbrella pines and other Mediterranean species that thrive on the volcanic soils of Vesuvius’s southern flanks. The reserve sits within the broader ecological corridor of the Vesuvius National Park, providing habitat continuity between the upper volcanic slopes and the cultivated lowlands. It is a popular destination for walks, picnics, and outdoor recreation for residents of the Nola and Naples metropolitan area.
History
Terzigno itself is an ancient settlement whose territory has been inhabited since at least Roman times, as evidenced by archaeological finds related to the Vesuvian eruptions. Pine plantations on the Vesuvian lower slopes were historically encouraged both for timber and to stabilise volcanic soil prone to erosion and lahar flows. The pineta as a recreational and ecological resource gained formal recognition in the twentieth century alongside the establishment of protection measures for the Vesuvius area.
What you see
Visitors encounter a dense canopy of stone pines (Pinus pinea) and maritime pines (Pinus pinaster) casting shade over volcanic-ash paths. The understorey includes maquis shrubs, wild herbs, and seasonal wildflowers typical of Mediterranean macchia. From clearings within the forest, views open towards the imposing silhouette of Mount Vesuvius and, on clear days, toward the Bay of Naples.
Cultural significance
Pine forests on the Vesuvian slopes are emblematic of the landscape that has framed the volcano for centuries in paintings, engravings, and literary descriptions by travellers on the Grand Tour. The Pineta of Terzigno represents the surviving natural counterpart to the heavily cultivated apricot and grapevine terraces of the area, and is valued as green infrastructure within the densely populated Naples metropolitan zone.
