Architect René Hodé designed it for Louise-Ida Le Roy de La Potherie and her husband, François Albert de La Rochefoucauld, Comte de Bayers, between 1847 and 1854. The castle replaced a medieval fortress that had passed through several prominent families, including the Châteaubriant and Chambes lineages before coming to the La Potherie family.
History
The site’s origins reach back to the Middle Ages, when it served as the seat of the seigneurie of Challain. Through centuries of inheritance and sale, the castle passed among notable families—including members of Nicolas Fouquet’s line—before the La Potherie family gave it their name.
Louise-Ida Le Roy de La Potherie (1806–1884) and her husband commissioned the current building as an expression of restored family status following the upheavals of the French Revolution. The choice of neo-Gothic reflected both personal ambition and fashion among the regional aristocracy. After their deaths, the castle declined, passing through numerous owners and uses: private residences, institutional holdings, and a summer camp. In 2002, it was converted into a luxury bed and breakfast.

Inside, the castle adheres to neoclassical proportions and layouts established in the 18th century, creating a dialogue between historical revival and rational planning.
