History
John Aloysius Crawley designed the original structure in 1875. The shrine gained international recognition when Pope Leo XIII issued a pontifical decree of coronation on 12 July 1893, formally recognizing the veneration of Our Lady of Consolation. Subsequent expansions—designed by Frederick Arthur Walters in 1896 and completed again in 1964—reflected the church’s growing importance as a place of pilgrimage.
