The Asiatic Society of Mumbai
A learned institution dedicated to Asian studies, the Asiatic Society of Mumbai traces its roots to an 1804 literary society founded to advance knowledge of India and its neighbouring regions.
At a glance
One of India’s oldest scholarly organizations, this society has served as a centre for research and intellectual exchange for over two centuries. Its collections and programmes reflect centuries of engagement with Asian culture, history, and thought.
History
The institution began as the Literary Society of Bombay, first convening on 26 November 1804 under the leadership of Sir James Mackintosh. Its founding purpose was clear: to promote useful knowledge, particularly concerning India.
When the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland established itself in London in 1823, the Literary Society of Bombay affiliated with it, becoming known as the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (BBRAS) from 1830 onwards. Expansion followed through mergers—the Bombay Geographical Society joined in 1873, and the Anthropological Society of Bombay in 1896.
In 1954, the society severed its connection to London and took the name Asiatic Society of Bombay. The present designation, the Asiatic Society of Mumbai, arrived in 2002. The organization continues to receive annual funding from India’s Central Government.
