Villa Marazzi
Villa Marazzi is a historic country residence in the municipality of Abbiategrasso, in the province of Milan, Lombardy. Set within the agricultural landscape of the Ticino river park southwest of Milan, the villa represents the tradition of Lombard noble villeggiatura — the seasonal migration of Milanese aristocratic and bourgeois families to country estates — that shaped the rural landscape of the Po plain from the 16th century onward. The surrounding territory of Abbiategrasso retains its medieval street plan and a rich concentration of Visconti-era monuments.

Overview
Villa Marazzi stands in the agricultural hinterland of Abbiategrasso, a historic town on the banks of the Naviglio Grande canal southwest of Milan. Abbiategrasso was an important Visconti possession from the 14th century and retains notable monuments including the Castello Visconteo and the church of Santa Maria Nuova, founded by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1388. The villa reflects the broader pattern of Milanese elite land ownership in the Po plain, where productive agricultural estates were combined with refined residential architecture for seasonal use.
History
The Lombard villa tradition as a cultural and economic institution developed from the 16th century onward, combining the ideals of the Renaissance villa (otium, nature, cultural refinement) with the management of large agricultural estates producing rice, wheat and silk. By the 18th century, the countryside around Milan was dotted with hundreds of such properties. The Marazzi family — like many Lombard bourgeois dynasties — accumulated land and built or renovated a country seat as a mark of social ascent during the period of Austrian rule over Lombardy. The 19th century brought further consolidation of these estates under the new Italian kingdom.
What you see
The villa presents the characteristic features of Lombard country architecture: a main residential block with a central courtyard or barchessa (porticoed loggia), service wings, and an enclosed garden or park. The surrounding landscape is that of the Parco del Ticino — Italy’s oldest regional park, established in 1974 — with rice paddies, poplar groves and the meandering Ticino river. The proximity of the Naviglio Grande, historically the major transport artery between Milan and the Ticino, adds historical depth to the setting.
Cultural significance
Villa Marazzi forms part of the cultural heritage of the Parco del Ticino, a protected landscape that preserves both natural and built heritage along the river corridor between Lake Maggiore and the Po. The Lombard villa system constitutes a distinctive form of territorial organisation recognised in Italian heritage legislation. The Abbiategrasso area, with its Visconti monuments and agricultural heritage, has been proposed as part of broader cultural itineraries linking the Po Valley’s historic estates.
