History
The first station on this site opened in 1862 with the railway line connecting Moscow to Ryazan. The current building, designed by architect Alexey Shchusev, began construction in 1913 and was completed in 1940. This extended building campaign reflects both the ambitions of imperial Russia and the upheaval of revolution and Soviet reorganization.
What you see
Shchusev’s design draws inspiration from the Söyembikä Tower in Kazan, the city that gives the station its name. The building’s aesthetic recalls traditional Russian architecture while serving the functional demands of a major transport hub. Its distinctive silhouette has become an iconic feature of Moscow’s railway landscape.

Kazansky station embodies the historical importance of rail transport to Russian expansion eastward.
