Church of Nercón
A UNESCO-protected wooden church on Chiloé Island, built from cypress and larch in the late 19th century, stands as a masterwork of traditional island architecture and craftsmanship.

The Church of Nercón (Iglesia de Señora de Gracia de Nercón) rises from the landscape of Chiloé Island near Castro. Constructed around 1890 in timber, it measures 40 metres in length, 15 metres wide, with a tower reaching 25 metres high. The interior contains a single-piece wooden sculpture of Saint Michael vanquishing a demon, its surface painted to resemble marble.
History
The current church was rebuilt in 1879, with construction completed by 1895. The Chilean government declared it a National Monument on 27 July 1984. In 2000, it became one of 16 Chiloé churches recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 30 November.
Restoration began in January 2012 under architect Katerine Araya and head carpenter Simón Cárcamo. During foundation work, the team discovered bone fragments and skulls, which were reported to the Council of National Monuments and handled according to heritage law.

The church exemplifies Chiloé’s distinctive timber architecture. Its cypress and larch construction—now deteriorating from constant island rains—is being selectively replaced with more durable woods while preserving as much original material as possible. The removal of the cupola during restoration sparked local debate.
The interior’s crowning achievement is a masterfully carved Saint Michael, rendered from a single block of wood with painted details that create an illusion of stone.

The church represents the pinnacle of Chiloé’s architectural tradition, a regional style shaped by island geography, available materials, and centuries of cultural practice. Its craftsmanship—particularly the wooden sculpture—demonstrates the artistic skill embedded in these island communities.

The church is located in the town of Nercón, about 4 kilometres from Castro, the main settlement on Chiloé Island. The site is accessible by road from Castro. Patron saint celebrations occur on 8 September (Our Lady of Grace) and 29 September (Saint Michael the Archangel).
