Speyer Cathedral
The largest remaining Romanesque church in Europe and burial site of emperors, Speyer Cathedral stands as a monument to imperial power and a watershed moment in medieval architecture.
At a glance
Officially the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St Stephen, Speyer Cathedral is a monumental triple-aisled vaulted basilica of red sandstone. Begun in 1030 under Conrad II and substantially completed by the early 12th century, it represents the pinnacle of Romanesque design. Pope Pius XI elevated it to minor basilica status in 1925.
History
Construction began in 1030 under Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II. The east end and high vault were completed between 1090 and 1103. As the resting place for Salian, Staufer and Habsburg emperors and kings, the cathedral became a symbol of imperial authority across generations of rulership. The building survived the centuries to remain the largest intact Romanesque church in Europe after the Abbey of Cluny fell into ruins.
What you see
The cathedral’s massive red sandstone structure dominates the urban landscape. Its triple-aisled layout and innovative high vault system—completed in the early 12th century—set a template for Romanesque basilicas that followed. The architectural vocabulary established here influenced religious building throughout the 11th and 12th centuries across Europe.
Cultural significance
Speyer Cathedral marks a turning point in European architecture. It synthesized earlier design principles into a unified, monumental statement that became the model for subsequent Romanesque development. UNESCO recognized it in 1981 as a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire. The cathedral’s role as an imperial necropolis and architectural innovator secured its place as one of the finest Romanesque monuments ever built.
